In practice, work-order control connects the work order to the approved routing, digital traveler, work instructions, materials, parts, serial or lot identifiers, tooling, inspection steps, and required records. It commonly includes status tracking, operation signoffs, revision control, holds, rework loops, nonconformance links, and completion evidence.
The term is often used in MES, ERP, PLM, and quality-system integration contexts. ERP may create or plan the order, while MES or an execution system typically controls shop-floor progress and captures execution data. Aerospace work-order control should not be confused with general scheduling alone; scheduling decides when work should happen, while work-order control manages whether the correct work is performed under the correct conditions and recorded against the correct configuration.
