An aerospace nonconformance is a departure from an approved requirement in a product, process, material, or record.

An aerospace nonconformance is a departure from an approved requirement in an aerospace product, process, material, supplier deliverable, or quality record. The requirement may come from a drawing, specification, work instruction, purchase order, customer requirement, inspection plan, or quality management system procedure.

In aerospace manufacturing and MRO, nonconformances are commonly documented in a nonconformance report or NCR. The record typically identifies the affected part, serial number or lot, operation, characteristic, evidence, containment status, and disposition path. Depending on the organization, disposition may involve roles such as quality, engineering, production, supplier quality, or a material review board.

Aerospace nonconformance should not be treated as the same thing as scrap. A nonconforming item may be reworked, repaired, used as-is under an approved disposition, returned to a supplier, or scrapped. It also should not be confused with a corrective action; corrective action addresses the cause of a recurring or significant issue, while the nonconformance record documents the specific detected condition.

In MES, QMS, ERP, and supplier quality workflows, aerospace nonconformance data supports traceability, containment, disposition control, rework routing, cost-of-poor-quality analysis, and linkage to inspection or first article records.

Aerospace manufacturers should document NCR-to-CAPA linkage with explicit, traceable cross-references between records, not informal comments or spreadsheet notes. Not every NCR requires CAPA, but the decision, rationale, evidence, ownership, status, and closure relationship should be controlled and auditable.

Can a single CAPA address multiple related NCRs from different programs?

Yes, a single CAPA can address multiple related NCRs across programs when the evidence supports a common systemic root cause and the actions can be traced, verified, and approved for each affected program. The NCRs still need their own dispositions, records, and customer or program-specific handling where required.

What is the difference between NCR, MRB, and CAPA?

An NCR records a specific nonconformance. MRB is the controlled review and disposition of affected material. CAPA addresses the underlying cause when the issue is systemic, recurring, high risk, or externally driven. They often connect, but they are not the same workflow.

What are common MRB disposition paths?

Common MRB disposition paths include rework, repair, use-as-is, scrap, return to supplier, sorting or screening, and sometimes downgrade or alternate use. The allowed path depends on authority, customer requirements, engineering approval, traceability, and how the decision is recorded across QMS, MES, ERP, and PLM systems.
