AS9100 product safety

AS9100 product safety is the control of aerospace product risks that could affect safe intended use.

AS9100 product safety refers to the activities and controls used to manage risks that could affect the safe intended use of an aerospace product. In an AS9100 quality management system context, it focuses on preventing or controlling product-related hazards across planning, production, inspection, handling, delivery, and service-related activities.

In manufacturing operations, product safety may involve controls for critical items, special requirements, foreign object debris prevention, configuration control, traceability, nonconformance handling, operator awareness, and escalation of safety-related concerns. The exact controls depend on the product, customer requirements, and organizational processes.

AS9100 product safety should not be confused with workplace health and safety. Workplace safety addresses hazards to personnel in the work environment. Product safety addresses whether the delivered product could create unacceptable risk when used as intended. It is also broader than simple product quality, because a conforming-looking part may still require safety-related controls if failure could affect aircraft, mission, or user safety.
