Capability mapping links required business, operational, or system capabilities to processes, roles, and technology.
Capability mapping is the practice of identifying the capabilities an organization or system needs and linking them to the processes, roles, data, and technologies that support them. In manufacturing, it is commonly used to show what an operation must be able to do and where those capabilities are enabled, missing, duplicated, or dependent on specific systems.
A capability map may cover business capabilities, production capabilities, quality functions, integration needs, or workforce skills. For example, an MES implementation may map capabilities such as electronic work instructions, nonconformance capture, genealogy, inspection recording, and ERP status updates to specific process steps and system functions.
Capability mapping is often used during system selection, implementation planning, gap analysis, and operating model design. It is not the same as a process map, which shows the sequence of work, or a data map, which shows how data fields move between systems. It also should not be confused with statistical process capability, such as Cp or Cpk, which measures how well a process meets specification limits.
