Containment controls the immediate impact of a problem; corrective action addresses the root cause to prevent recurrence.
Containment vs corrective action is the distinction between immediate controls used to limit the effect of a problem and longer-term actions used to address the cause of the problem. In manufacturing quality workflows, containment is about controlling current risk, while corrective action is about preventing the same issue from recurring.
Containment commonly includes short-term actions such as segregating suspect material, stopping shipment, adding temporary inspection, notifying affected areas, or blocking use of nonconforming product. These actions do not necessarily fix the underlying process issue. They reduce exposure while the issue is investigated.
Corrective action follows root cause analysis and changes the process, system, tooling, training, documentation, supplier control, or other contributing factor that allowed the issue to occur. It is commonly managed through NCR, CAPA, 8D, or RCCA workflows in quality management systems, MES, or connected manufacturing records.
Containment should not be confused with correction. A correction fixes or reworks the specific detected condition. Containment controls the affected population or risk window. Corrective action addresses the cause. In regulated or quality-sensitive manufacturing, records often need to show these steps separately because they answer different operational questions.
