Decision ownership

Decision ownership is the assigned authority and accountability for making or approving a defined decision.

Decision ownership is the assigned authority and accountability for making or approving a defined decision. It identifies which role, person, or function has the right to decide, who provides input, and where the decision is recorded.

In manufacturing and industrial systems, decision ownership is commonly used for production releases, nonconformance disposition, engineering changes, supplier approvals, process deviations, and escalation paths. It helps clarify whether a decision belongs to operations, quality, engineering, supply chain, or another function.

Decision ownership should not be confused with performing all related work. A decision owner may rely on data, reviews, or recommendations from others, but remains responsible for the decision within the defined scope. In software workflows, decision ownership is often reflected through approval roles, permissions, electronic signatures, routing rules, and audit trails.
