FAI plan

An FAI plan defines how a first article inspection will verify required characteristics against drawings and specifications.

An FAI plan is a controlled plan for how a First Article Inspection will be performed. It defines what product characteristics, drawings, specifications, processes, and evidence will be checked to confirm that an initial production item conforms to the applicable engineering and quality requirements.

In manufacturing, especially aerospace and other regulated supply chains, an FAI plan commonly identifies the part or assembly, applicable revision levels, ballooned characteristics, inspection methods, acceptance criteria, required records, and responsibilities. It may reference data from PLM, ERP, MES, QMS, inspection systems, or supplier documentation.

An FAI plan should not be confused with an FAI report. The plan defines the intended inspection scope and method; the report records the actual inspection results and supporting evidence. In AS9102-related workflows, the plan supports preparation and execution of first article inspection, while released plans and changes are typically managed through document control, approvals, and revision traceability.
