FAI restart

An FAI restart is the renewal of a First Article Inspection when prior FAI evidence is no longer sufficient.

FAI restart refers to starting a First Article Inspection again when the previous FAI baseline is no longer sufficient to represent the current product, process, or production condition. In manufacturing, especially aerospace and other regulated supply chains, it is a quality and traceability activity used to re-establish documented evidence that the part or assembly conforms to applicable requirements.

An FAI restart may be considered after changes such as a design revision, manufacturing process change, tooling change, production site change, material or supplier change, or a significant production lapse. The exact trigger depends on customer requirements, internal procedures, and the applicable quality framework.

In AS9102-related usage, an FAI restart is commonly distinguished from a partial or delta FAI. A restart usually implies a broader re-performance of the FAI package, while a partial FAI focuses on affected characteristics or changes. It does not mean restarting normal production, reworking a part, or automatically achieving acceptance; it refers to the inspection and documentation process used to establish or update the FAI record.
