Inspection characteristic

An inspection characteristic is a defined attribute checked against a specified requirement during inspection.

An inspection characteristic is a defined product or process attribute that is checked against a specified requirement during inspection. In manufacturing, it describes what must be verified, such as a dimension, tolerance, material property, surface condition, functional result, or required process parameter.

Inspection characteristics are commonly taken from drawings, specifications, control plans, work instructions, or first article inspection requirements. They may be assigned an identifier, balloon number, nominal value, tolerance, inspection method, gage, sampling rule, and recorded result in a quality system, MES, QMS, or inspection record.

An inspection characteristic is not the same as the inspection result. The characteristic defines what is to be checked; the result records what was found. It also should not be assumed to be critical unless it is separately identified as a key, critical, or special characteristic.
