Internal traceability is the ability to follow materials, parts, products, and related process records within a manufacturing operation. It shows what happened inside the organization, such as where an item moved, which work order it was tied to, what operations were performed, and which records were created along the way.
In manufacturing systems, internal traceability commonly connects identifiers such as lot numbers, serial numbers, batches, work orders, routings, equipment, operators, inspection results, process parameters, and nonconformance records. It is often supported by MES, ERP, quality management systems, digital travelers, barcode or RFID capture, and production history records.
Internal traceability should not be confused with external traceability, which focuses on supplier inputs or customer shipments across organizational boundaries. It is also related to, but not always the same as, product genealogy. Genealogy usually describes the parent-child relationship between components and assemblies, while internal traceability covers the broader operational record of movement, processing, inspection, and status inside the facility.
