A manufacturing bill of material defines the parts and materials needed to build a product in production.
A manufacturing bill of material is the production-oriented list of parts, materials, subassemblies, and sometimes consumables needed to make a product. It describes what manufacturing requires to build, assemble, or process an item, often in the structure and sequence used by the shop floor.
In industrial systems, a manufacturing bill of material is commonly used by ERP, MES, planning, inventory, and production execution processes. It may include make-or-buy items, phantom assemblies, packaging materials, alternates, approved substitutions, scrap factors, and links to operations or routings. It supports material planning, kitting, work order execution, traceability, and cost rollups.
The term is commonly abbreviated as MBOM. It should not be confused with an engineering bill of material, which represents the product as designed, or with a routing, which defines the operations and work centers used to make it. In a digital thread, the MBOM is often mapped to engineering, inventory, work order, and quality records so that product structure, revisions, and production history remain consistent across systems.
