Point Solution

A point solution is a software or tool designed to solve a narrow, specific operational problem, usually without covering end-to-end workflows.

A point solution is a software application, tool, or technology that is designed to address a narrow, clearly defined problem or use case, rather than managing an entire end-to-end process. It typically focuses on a single function or workflow, such as inspection data capture, machine monitoring, electronic work instructions, or supplier scorecarding.

In industrial and regulated manufacturing environments, point solutions often appear as standalone tools used by a specific department or team. Examples include:

  • A standalone SPC (statistical process control) application used only at inspection stations
  • An electronic work instruction tool used on a single production line
  • A separate tool for tracking nonconformances in one plant, not integrated with the enterprise QMS
  • A machine condition monitoring dashboard that is not connected to MES or ERP

How point solutions show up in operations

Point solutions are commonly acquired to solve an urgent or localized issue, such as digitizing a paper form, improving visibility for one process, or meeting a specific customer or regulatory requirement at a single site. They may integrate with core systems like MES, ERP, PLM, or QMS, but are often deployed with limited interoperability and governance.

From an operational and systems perspective, point solutions:

  • Focus on a single function, role, or department (for example, incoming inspection or maintenance planning)
  • May duplicate capabilities already present in enterprise platforms, but with different data models or workflows
  • Can create separate data stores that require extra effort for traceability, reporting, and audit evidence
  • Can be integrated into broader architectures, but are not, by themselves, a full MES, ERP, or end-to-end QMS

What a point solution is not

A point solution is not an enterprise platform that supports a broad set of processes across multiple functions. It typically does not:

  • Cover the full manufacturing value stream from planning through execution and quality release
  • Act as the system of record for production history, genealogy, or enterprise-wide quality
  • Provide standardized governance across sites, business units, or product families

Common confusion

Point solution vs platform: A platform, such as a MES or enterprise QMS, provides a foundation for multiple workflows, data models, and integrations across the organization. A point solution focuses on one discrete need, even if it is configurable.

Point solution vs module: A module is usually part of a larger, integrated platform (for example, a CAPA module within a QMS). A point solution is typically a separate product that can exist independently from other systems, even if it offers integrations.

Context in regulated manufacturing

In regulated or aerospace environments, point solutions are often used for specific compliance-related activities, such as digital first article inspection capture, gage R&R studies, or supplier NCR logging for a subset of suppliers. When used this way, they need clear data ownership, integration rules, and document control to ensure that records support traceability, audit readiness, and consistent quality management across systems.
