Serial Effectivity

Serial effectivity defines which specific serialized units a part, change, instruction, or requirement applies to.

Serial effectivity is a configuration control method that defines applicability by specific serial numbers or serial number ranges. It states which serialized units a part, engineering change, work instruction, inspection requirement, or document revision applies to.

In manufacturing systems, serial effectivity is commonly used in PLM, ERP, MES, digital traveler, and quality workflows to ensure the correct configuration is applied to each unit. For example, an engineering change may apply starting with aircraft serial number 1205, while earlier serial numbers continue to follow the previous configuration unless reworked or retrofitted.

Serial effectivity should not be confused with general revision control. A revision identifies the version of a document, part, or specification; serial effectivity identifies which physical units that version applies to. It is also distinct from date effectivity, lot effectivity, or batch effectivity, which determine applicability by time period, lot, or batch rather than by individual serial number.
