Data Provenance

Digital systems can reduce lot tracking errors, but not by automation alone. The main gains come from controlled data entry, barcode scanning, system-enforced genealogy, version control, and audit trails tied to ERP, MES, QMS, and receiving records. Results depend on master data quality, process discipline, integration reliability, and validation in the actual plant environment.

Do not pretend late-arriving data does not exist. Historical KPIs should be allowed to restate when source events arrive late, but only with clear versioning, cutoff rules, and auditability. The practical solution is to separate provisional from locked reporting, preserve original values, and make restatements traceable across MES, ERP, QMS, and manual sources.

An NCR is audit-ready when an independent reviewer can reconstruct what happened, what requirement was not met, what was done about it, who approved each decision, and how closure was verified. That depends on traceable evidence, controlled records, valid approvals, and consistent links to MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, and inspection data.

IIoT data can support NADCAP audits when MES links equipment readings to the correct job, operation, material, specification revision, operator action, and audit trail. It does not make a process audit-ready by itself; sensor validity, calibration, time sync, exception handling, retention, and validation still matter.
