How S&OP is used in manufacturing

In practice, S&OP is implemented as a monthly or periodic cycle that:

– Integrates data from ERP, APS, and sometimes MES or quality systems
– Aggregates demand and supply at product-family or value-stream level
– Highlights capacity bottlenecks, material constraints, and major risks
– Supports management decisions on overtime, outsourcing, stocking strategies, and product mix
– Feeds more detailed master production scheduling and materials planning processes

Typical steps (names vary by company) include:

1. **Data gathering** – Collecting demand history, forecasts, open orders, inventory, capacity, and key constraints.
2. **Demand review** – Reviewing forecasts, customer programs, and market assumptions.
3. **Supply review** – Evaluating capacity, material availability, lead times, and proposed supply responses.
4. **Pre-S&OP** – Reconciling major gaps and preparing scenarios and trade‑offs.
5. **Executive S&OP meeting** – Approving a single plan and recording assumptions and decisions.

Boundaries and what S&OP is not

– **Not detailed scheduling:** S&OP operates at an aggregate level (product families, plants, major lines) and a longer time horizon than daily or weekly shop-floor schedules.
– **Not just forecasting:** Demand forecasting is an input; S&OP is the governance process that reconciles demand with constrained supply and financial goals.
– **Not only a supply chain tool:** While often led by supply chain, it is cross-functional and includes sales, marketing, operations, engineering, and finance.
– **Not S&OE:** S&OP focuses on medium-term balancing; Sales and Operations Execution (S&OE) focuses on short-term (days–weeks) adjustments.

Common confusion and related terms

– **S&OP vs. IBP (Integrated Business Planning):** IBP commonly refers to an extended form of S&OP that more tightly integrates financial planning, portfolio decisions, and sometimes strategic planning. In many factories the terms are used interchangeably, but IBP typically implies broader scope and stronger finance integration.
– **S&OP vs. MPS (Master Production Scheduling):** MPS translates the aggregated S&OP plan into item-level and period-level production quantities, usually over a shorter horizon.
– **S&OP vs. S&OE:** S&OP is typically monthly and medium-term; S&OE is weekly/daily and focused on executing and adjusting the approved S&OP plan.

In regulated industries (such as aerospace, pharma, and medical devices), S&OP commonly:
