Stage 1 Audit

A preliminary certification audit that reviews a site’s documented management system and readiness before a full Stage 2 audit.

A Stage 1 audit is the first formal step in a two-stage external certification audit, commonly used for management system standards in regulated manufacturing environments (for example, quality, environmental, or information security standards). It focuses on assessing whether an organization is prepared for the more detailed Stage 2 audit.

What a Stage 1 audit includes

A Stage 1 audit commonly includes:

  • Review of documented policies, procedures, and process descriptions
  • Verification that the scope of the management system is defined and appropriate
  • High-level review of process mapping and interactions (often linked to production, quality, maintenance, and supporting OT/IT processes)
  • Checks that required records exist (for example, internal audits, management review, basic training evidence)
  • Assessment of site readiness, available resources, and understanding of standard requirements
  • Identification of significant gaps that would prevent a successful Stage 2 audit

The outcome is typically a readiness evaluation and a list of issues or risks that should be addressed before proceeding to Stage 2.

How it shows up in industrial and regulated environments

In industrial operations, a Stage 1 audit often touches:

  • How production and quality processes are documented and controlled
  • Integration of MES, ERP, LIMS, or other systems into the documented process landscape
  • Evidence that critical activities such as change control, calibration, and batch record management are defined
  • Roles and responsibilities for OT/IT system ownership and data integrity

The Stage 1 audit is generally conducted off-site or as a short on-site visit and is less detailed than Stage 2. It does not normally include deep sampling of records, extensive interviews, or full process walkthroughs.

What a Stage 1 audit is not

A Stage 1 audit is not:

  • The formal basis for granting certification or registration
  • A full conformity assessment of all processes and records
  • A replacement for internal audits or ongoing compliance monitoring

Common confusion

Stage 1 audit vs Stage 2 audit: The Stage 1 audit concentrates on readiness and documentation at a higher level. The Stage 2 audit evaluates effective implementation, typically by sampling real production activities, records, and interviews across departments.

Stage 1 audit vs internal audit: An internal audit is performed by or on behalf of the organization itself to verify implementation and effectiveness. A Stage 1 audit is an external activity performed by a certification body or independent auditor as part of a formal certification process.
