Traceability data is the recorded information that links materials, parts, processes, equipment, people, and quality events across a product’s manufacturing history. It shows what was made, from which inputs, under which process conditions, and how related records are connected.
In industrial systems, traceability data is commonly captured in MES, ERP, QMS, PLM, inspection systems, historians, and related shop-floor applications. It may include lot or serial identifiers, work orders, routings, material receipts, equipment IDs, timestamps, inspection results, nonconformances, rework history, and disposition records. This data supports genealogy, containment analysis, quality investigations, production review, and operational analytics.
Traceability data should not be confused with inventory status or production tracking alone. Inventory data describes what is on hand and where it is located; traceability data describes the relationships and history behind the product, component, batch, or process event. It is also narrower than a full digital thread, which may connect engineering, planning, manufacturing, quality, and service information across a broader lifecycle.
The usefulness of traceability data depends on consistent identifiers, complete genealogy, accurate timestamps, reliable master data, and integration between systems that create or consume the records.
