WIP visibility is the ability to see the status, location, quantity, and progress of work in process across production.
WIP visibility is the ability to see the current status, location, quantity, and progress of work in process across a manufacturing operation. It shows where jobs, lots, units, or assemblies are in the production flow and what condition they are in at a given point in time.
In industrial systems, WIP visibility is commonly supported by MES, ERP, digital travelers, barcode or RFID transactions, operator reporting, equipment signals, and production dashboards. It may include information such as routing step, queue status, hold status, inspection status, rework status, aging time, priority, and expected completion.
WIP visibility should not be confused with total inventory visibility. Inventory visibility shows material quantities and locations more broadly, while WIP visibility focuses on material or units that have already entered production and are moving through controlled operations. It is also more immediate than periodic production reporting, although its accuracy depends on timely and consistent data capture.
WIP visibility is used for production control, schedule adherence, bottleneck detection, traceability, shortage response, and quality follow-up. In regulated or quality-sensitive manufacturing, it can also help connect execution status with records, inspections, and nonconformance workflows without by itself implying compliance or validation.
