Competency sign-off is documented confirmation that a worker has demonstrated required skills for a defined task.
Competency sign-off is a documented confirmation that a person has demonstrated the required knowledge, skill, and task performance for a defined role, operation, or process step. In manufacturing, it commonly records that an operator, inspector, technician, or other worker has been assessed against specific work requirements before performing the activity independently.
Competency sign-off is commonly used in training workflows, skills matrices, digital work instruction systems, learning records, and quality-sensitive production environments. It may be based on observed task execution, supervised practice, practical assessment, review of required procedures, or other defined criteria set by the organization.
It should not be confused with simple training attendance. Attendance shows that a person received or participated in training; competency sign-off indicates that competence for a defined task was evaluated and recorded. It also does not, by itself, mean that a process is validated, a product is certified, or an external compliance outcome has been achieved.
