A skills matrix maps workers, roles, skills, and training status to support staffing and qualification visibility.
A skills matrix is a structured record that maps people or roles to the skills, qualifications, training status, or work authorizations needed for specific tasks. In manufacturing, it is commonly used to show who is trained, current, or approved to perform particular operations, inspections, equipment setups, or support activities.
A skills matrix may be maintained in a spreadsheet, training system, MES, QMS, or workforce management tool. It often supports shift planning, cross-training, coverage analysis, and access to work instructions or production steps that require specific qualifications.
The term is closely related to a training matrix or competency matrix. A training matrix usually emphasizes completed or required training, while a competency matrix may include assessed proficiency levels. A skills matrix should not be treated as the underlying evidence by itself; it typically points to supporting training records, assessments, approvals, or experience records.
