Data residency matters when MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, historian, or supplier systems exchange data across sites, regions, or cloud environments. The term can apply to primary databases, replicated environments, disaster recovery copies, file storage, audit logs, and support-access workflows.
Data residency should not be confused with data sovereignty or data localization. Data sovereignty concerns the legal authority that may apply to data based on jurisdiction. Data localization usually refers to a requirement or policy to keep certain data within a specific country or region. Data residency describes where the data resides; by itself, it does not confirm access control, encryption, export-control handling, validation, or compliance status.
