ERP MES Transaction Ownership

ERP MES transaction ownership is the defined accountability for which system creates, updates, approves, or records a transaction when ERP and MES are integrated. It clarifies the system of record for each transaction so that production, inventory, quality, and order data are not duplicated or changed inconsistently across systems.

In manufacturing, ERP commonly owns enterprise-level transactions such as customer orders, purchase orders, inventory valuation, material requirements planning, and financial posting. MES commonly owns shop-floor execution transactions such as operation starts and completions, labor capture, equipment status, in-process checks, scrap, rework, and production traceability. The exact boundary depends on the operating model and integration design.

Transaction ownership is not the same as data visibility. A system may display or consume data from another system without being allowed to change it. For example, MES may receive a released work order from ERP and report completions back, while ERP remains the owner of the order header and MES owns the detailed execution record.

Clear ownership is commonly documented in integration specifications, process maps, and data governance models. It helps define master data flow, exception handling, audit trails, reconciliation rules, and which system should be treated as authoritative when records differ.
