FAI Documentation Error

An FAI documentation error is a mistake, omission, or inconsistency in a First Article Inspection record package.

An FAI documentation error is a mistake, omission, or inconsistency in the records used to support a First Article Inspection. In aerospace and other regulated manufacturing environments, it usually refers to an error in the FAI package rather than an automatic indication that the part itself is nonconforming.

Common examples include a missing characteristic result, incorrect balloon or characteristic reference, wrong drawing revision, incomplete material or process evidence, transcription error, missing approval field, or mismatch between an inspection result and the supporting record. These errors can affect traceability, review efficiency, and the ability to understand what was inspected and against which requirement.

An FAI documentation error should not be confused with a product nonconformance. A documentation error concerns the accuracy or completeness of the inspection record. A product nonconformance concerns the part, process, or requirement result. In practice, review of the documentation error may reveal a separate nonconformance, but the terms describe different issues.

In AS9102-related workflows, FAI documentation errors are commonly managed through document correction, revision control, evidence review, or quality workflow steps defined by the organization. The specific handling depends on the company’s procedures, customer requirements, and the nature of the error.
