FAI software manages digital first article inspection records, characteristics, evidence, and approvals.
FAI software is software used to manage the first article inspection process, including inspection characteristics, measurement results, supporting evidence, review steps, and completed inspection records. In manufacturing, it is most commonly used where a first production item, new revision, process change, or supplier submission must be inspected and documented before broader production activity continues.
In aerospace and other regulated manufacturing environments, FAI software often supports AS9102-style workflows. Common functions include drawing ballooning, characteristic capture, form generation, attachment of measurement evidence, revision control, approval routing, and traceability to part numbers, purchase orders, work orders, or supplier submissions.
FAI software should not be confused with general inspection software, a full quality management system, or an MES. It may integrate with ERP, MES, PLM, document control, or supplier portals, but its specific role is to structure and control first article inspection data and records. The software can support consistent execution and recordkeeping, but it does not by itself establish compliance, validation, or acceptance of the inspected item.
