MRB board roles

MRB board roles define who reviews, approves, and records dispositions for nonconforming material.

MRB board roles are the defined responsibilities and authorities assigned to people who participate in a Material Review Board process. In manufacturing, an MRB commonly reviews nonconforming material, evaluates impact, and determines or approves a disposition such as use-as-is, rework, repair, scrap, or return to supplier.

The phrase is somewhat redundant because MRB means Material Review Board. In practice, it usually refers to the role model behind the MRB workflow rather than to a corporate board. Typical roles may include quality, manufacturing engineering, design or product engineering, production, supply chain, and customer or supplier quality representatives where applicable.

MRB roles are commonly represented in quality management systems, MES workflows, ERP quality modules, or electronic nonconformance records. They help define who can review evidence, assign actions, approve dispositions, update records, and maintain traceability. The specific authority for each role is normally set by the organization’s procedures, product requirements, and customer or regulatory expectations.

MRB board roles should not be confused with general approval routing. An MRB role is tied specifically to the technical and quality review of nonconforming material and its documented disposition.
