Return-to-service is the controlled step of making equipment, systems, or assets available for use after work or hold.
Return-to-service (RTS) is the controlled process or status used to make equipment, a system, an aircraft, a tool, or another operational asset available for use after maintenance, repair, inspection, calibration, testing, or a quality hold.
In manufacturing and industrial operations, RTS commonly indicates that required work has been completed, relevant checks have been recorded, and the asset is no longer restricted from normal operation. It may appear in maintenance systems, MES workflows, calibration records, quality systems, electronic travelers, and MRO records.
RTS does not simply mean that repair work is finished. It usually includes a defined handoff from a restricted or unavailable state to an approved operating state, based on the organization’s procedures and required evidence. For example, a production fixture may be returned to service after calibration results are recorded and its status is updated in the maintenance or quality system.
In aviation and aerospace MRO, return-to-service can have a more specific operational meaning tied to releasing an aircraft, component, or system after maintenance activity. The general concept remains the same: the item is made available for use after the required work, checks, and records are complete.
