Serial traceability

Serial traceability is the ability to identify and follow an individual serialized item through its lifecycle.

Serial traceability is the ability to identify, track, and retrieve records for an individual item using a unique serial number. In manufacturing, it links a specific unit to its materials, operations, inspections, test results, nonconformances, rework, shipment, and other lifecycle records.

Serial traceability is commonly used for high-value, regulated, safety-critical, or configuration-controlled products where records must distinguish one unit from another. It may appear in MES, ERP, QMS, PLM, maintenance, and supplier systems, often as part of an as-built record or digital thread.

Serial traceability is more specific than lot or batch traceability. Lot traceability follows a group of items produced or received together, while serial traceability follows one uniquely identified item. It also differs from simple part number tracking, which identifies the item type but not the individual unit.

Serial traceability does not by itself establish product conformity or compliance. It provides the record linkage needed to understand what happened to a specific serialized unit and where supporting evidence is stored.
