Storage and transportation loss ratio

Storage and transportation loss ratio measures losses during warehousing and movement relative to the amount handled.

Storage and transportation loss ratio is a logistics and operations KPI that compares the amount of material, product, or inventory lost during storage and transport with the total amount handled over a defined period.

In manufacturing, the loss may include damage, spoilage, leakage, shrinkage, missing inventory, or other unplanned losses that occur in warehouses, staging areas, internal logistics, or external transportation. The ratio is commonly calculated using quantity, weight, units, or value, depending on the material and reporting purpose.

This KPI can help indicate problems in material handling, packaging, warehouse control, transport conditions, or inventory transaction discipline. It should not be treated as a direct measure of inventory accuracy. Inventory accuracy depends on whether system records match physical inventory, while this ratio focuses on losses associated with storing and moving goods.

In ISO 22400-related manufacturing KPI discussions, storage and transportation loss ratio is typically viewed as a supporting logistics indicator rather than a complete inventory control metric.
