Subject matter expert

A subject matter expert is a person with deep process, product, or system knowledge used to guide manufacturing work.

A subject matter expert is a person with deep knowledge of a specific process, product, system, material, or operational area. In manufacturing, the term commonly refers to someone whose experience is used to explain how work is performed, why controls exist, and what details are important for quality, safety, traceability, or system accuracy.

Subject matter experts are often involved in creating or reviewing work instructions, training content, process documentation, troubleshooting guides, data definitions, and system requirements. For example, an experienced operator, manufacturing engineer, quality inspector, planner, or maintenance technician may act as the SME for a defined area of work.

An SME is not automatically the process owner, document approver, or final authority. In regulated or quality-sensitive environments, SME input is commonly routed through engineering, quality, training, or document control before it becomes controlled content or formal instruction.

The abbreviation SME can also mean small or medium-sized enterprise in business contexts. In manufacturing documentation, training, and systems work, it usually means subject matter expert unless the context indicates otherwise.

Integrated systems can reduce unqualified work assignments by checking current training, certifications, role permissions, and process requirements before work is dispatched or accepted. This only works if qualification data is authoritative, current, validated, and connected to MES, ERP, QMS, and training records.

At what point in the workflow should training qualifications be checked?

Training qualifications should be checked before controlled work is performed, with additional checks at assignment, operation start, signoff, and after relevant process or document changes. The exact gate depends on how MES, QMS, LMS, and routing data are integrated and validated.

How can execution data be used to identify operator training gaps?

Execution data can highlight where operators, shifts, or work centers struggle with specific steps, characteristics, tools, or revisions. It should not be treated as proof of poor training by itself; equipment condition, instruction quality, material issues, system usability, and process changes must be ruled out.

Are smart glasses practical for everyday use in a hangar or shop?

Smart glasses can be practical in hangars and shops, but usually for targeted workflows and specific stations rather than universal, all-day use. Their value depends heavily on use-case selection, ergonomics, battery life, network coverage, integration with existing MES/QMS, validation efforts, PPE compatibility, and union/safety constraints.
