System of Engagement

A system of engagement guides users through work while relying on other systems for authoritative records.

A system of engagement is a software layer or application used to guide people through work, support collaboration, and capture interactions around a process. In manufacturing, it commonly refers to an operator-facing or workflow-facing system that helps users execute tasks while other systems may remain authoritative for core records.

Examples include digital work instruction platforms, connected worker applications, exception-handling workflows, and shop-floor guidance tools. These systems may present instructions, collect confirmations, prompt inspections, or route issues to supervisors, quality, maintenance, or engineering.

A system of engagement should not automatically be treated as the system of record. The system of record is the authoritative source for specific data, such as work orders, routings, inventory, quality records, or traceability. A system of engagement may create or update records through integration, but its authority depends on the defined system architecture and governance.

In MES, ERP, PLM, and QMS environments, the term is often used to describe a user-facing execution layer that coexists with established enterprise systems. For example, an MES may remain the system of record for production status and traceability, while a digital work instruction system acts as the system of engagement for operator guidance.
