APQP

APQP, or Advanced Product Quality Planning, is a structured methodology used to plan, develop, and validate products and manufacturing processes to meet defined customer and regulatory requirements. It is most closely associated with the automotive industry and commonly referenced alongside standards such as IATF 16949, but the approach is also applied in other regulated and high-risk manufacturing environments.

What APQP includes

APQP commonly refers to an end-to-end quality planning framework that spans:

  • Planning and definition: Clarifying customer requirements, regulatory expectations, and business assumptions before detailed design begins.
  • Product design and development: Applying design reviews, risk analysis (for example FMEA), and design verification activities.
  • Process design and development: Defining the manufacturing process, process flow, control plan, work instructions, and measurement methods.
  • Product and process validation: Conducting trials such as production part approval (e.g., PPAP), capability studies, and finalizing control plans.
  • Feedback, assessment, and corrective actions: Using production data, nonconformance trends, and customer feedback to refine product and process controls.

APQP is typically documented through standardized deliverables such as design FMEAs, process FMEAs, control plans, process flow diagrams, measurement system analyses, and validation reports. These artifacts are often managed within a quality management system (QMS) and linked to MES, ERP, or PLM systems to maintain traceability.

Operational meaning in manufacturing

In day-to-day operations, APQP provides a common structure for cross-functional teams from engineering, quality, production, and supply chain to coordinate:

  • New product introductions and product transfers between plants.
  • Significant process changes that may affect form, fit, function, or regulatory status.
  • Supplier development and qualification for critical or safety-related components.

Manufacturing organizations often map APQP phases to internal project gates and use it to define required evidence before moving from development to full production, especially in audited or customer-approved environments.

Relationship to IATF 16949 and automotive practices

In the automotive sector, APQP is closely aligned with the expectations of IATF 16949. While APQP itself is not a standard or certification, it is a widely accepted method that supports compliance with automotive quality management requirements. Customers may reference APQP in supplier requirements, especially for safety-related or high-risk parts.

Common confusion

  • APQP vs. PPAP: APQP is the broader planning and development framework, while PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is a specific set of deliverables and evidence used to approve a production part and process, typically as an output of APQP.
  • APQP vs. general project management: Project management focuses on timelines, resources, and milestones. APQP focuses specifically on planning, controlling, and documenting product and process quality within that project.

Use beyond automotive

Although APQP originated in automotive, its concepts are also applied in aerospace, medical devices, and other regulated industries to structure quality planning for new products, major design changes, and critical process changes.
