Bottleneck visibility

Bottleneck visibility is the ability to see which constraint is limiting production flow or capacity.

Bottleneck visibility is the ability to identify and monitor the process step, resource, material, or system constraint that is limiting production flow or capacity. In manufacturing, it refers to making constraints observable through operational data, status signals, and workflow context.

Bottleneck visibility is commonly used in production execution, scheduling, MES, ERP, quality, and continuous improvement contexts. It may show where queues are building, where cycle time exceeds plan, where work is waiting for inspection or approval, or where equipment, labor, tooling, or material availability is restricting throughput.

The term does not mean the bottleneck has been removed. It is also not the same as a single performance metric such as OEE, although OEE, WIP, queue time, schedule adherence, and defect or rework signals can help expose bottlenecks. Bottleneck visibility provides the operational view needed to prioritize investigation, escalation, and capacity actions.
