Bottleneck visibility

For small and mid-sized aerospace suppliers, true second-by-second visibility across every asset and system is rarely realistic. A more practical target is minute-level visibility on key constraints and work orders, with near-real-time status rolled up from a mix of machines, MES/ERP data, and manual updates. Achieving this depends heavily on integration quality, data discipline, and process maturity.

For aerospace cells, the useful OEE view is usually not a single percentage. Track constrained-resource availability, unplanned downtime, setup loss, planned-versus-actual cycle performance, first-pass yield, rework, scrap, NCR/MRB activity, and hold or queue time. Definitions matter because high-mix, low-volume work can distort standard OEE.

OEE is often treated as a universal metric, but in practice every plant makes different scoping, data, and calculation choices. Without a standardized KPI framework that defines boundaries, data sources, loss models, and governance, cross-plant OEE comparisons are usually misleading and can drive the wrong behaviors in regulated, brownfield environments.

ISO 22400 defines more than one way to calculate Overall Equipment Effectiveness. OEEA and OEEB are two standardized variants with different assumptions about time bases and loss categories. Plants in regulated, brownfield environments should be explicit about which variant they use, how it is implemented in MES/SCADA, and how it is validated.
