Defense article

A defense article is an item, software, or technical data designated as defense-related under export control rules.

A defense article is an item, software, or technical data that is designated as defense-related under an export control framework. In U.S. ITAR usage, the term commonly refers to articles listed on the United States Munitions List, including controlled parts, assemblies, equipment, software, and certain related technical data.

In manufacturing, the term is often used when determining how drawings, models, work instructions, inspection records, FAI packages, supplier data, or production artifacts should be handled. A part used on an aerospace or defense program is not automatically a defense article only because of its customer or format. Jurisdiction, program context, intended use, and technical content all matter.

A defense article should not be confused with a defense service, which generally refers to assistance, training, or support related to controlled defense articles. It also should not be confused with an ordinary written article or publication; in this context, “article” means a controlled item or controlled technical data.
