In cyber threat intelligence and cybersecurity, ICS refers specifically to control systems that may be targeted by threats affecting physical operations. Examples include:

  • Malware or intrusion campaigns directed at PLCs or engineering workstations.
  • Attacks on remote access or vendor connections into ICS networks.
  • Threats that could alter control logic, disable safety interlocks, or disrupt production.

Analysts and OT security teams often distinguish ICS-focused threats, vulnerabilities, and indicators from those that mainly affect traditional IT assets such as office networks or business applications.

Common confusion

ICS vs OT: OT (operational technology) is a broader category that includes ICS as well as other process-related technologies, such as safety instrumented systems or building management systems. ICS is one specific type of OT focused on direct process control.

ICS vs SCADA or DCS: SCADA and DCS are specific architectures or system types within the overall ICS family. ICS is the umbrella term, while SCADA and DCS describe particular implementations.

Other meanings of ICS: In some fields, ICS may stand for terms such as Incident Command System or Integrated Care System. In industrial and manufacturing cybersecurity and operations, ICS almost always refers to Industrial Control Systems.
