Suspect Counterfeit Part

A suspect counterfeit part is a part with indicators that its identity, source, or authenticity may be false.

A suspect counterfeit part is a part that has indicators suggesting its identity, source, material, documentation, or condition may have been misrepresented. It is not necessarily confirmed to be counterfeit, but there is enough uncertainty or evidence to require controlled handling until the issue is resolved.

In manufacturing and aerospace quality systems, the term is commonly used in receiving inspection, supplier quality, inventory control, nonconformance workflows, and traceability reviews. Examples include parts with missing or inconsistent certificates, altered markings, unverifiable chain of custody, unusual packaging, conflicting test results, or sourcing from an unapproved or high-risk channel.

A suspect counterfeit part should not be confused with any ordinary nonconforming part. A nonconforming part fails a requirement; a suspect counterfeit part raises concern about authenticity or misrepresentation. In practice, it may still be controlled through nonconformance, segregation, disposition, and supplier communication processes while authenticity is evaluated.
