Quality management software

Quality management software manages and records quality processes such as NCRs, CAPA, audits, and document control.

Quality management software is software used to manage, document, and track quality-related processes in an organization. In manufacturing, it commonly supports activities such as nonconformance management, corrective and preventive action, audits, inspection records, document control, training records, supplier quality, and traceability.

The term often overlaps with QMS software or eQMS, which refer to electronic systems used to operate parts of a quality management system. The software is not the quality management system itself; it is a tool used to execute, control, and retain evidence for defined quality processes.

In industrial environments, quality management software may integrate with MES, ERP, PLM, inspection systems, or supplier portals. For example, a nonconformance created during production may link to a work order, part number, lot, inspection result, disposition, and CAPA workflow.

Quality management software should not be confused with MES. MES focuses on production execution and shop-floor control, while quality management software focuses on quality workflows, records, approvals, and quality event management. In practice, the two systems may share data or include overlapping functions.

Use your existing FMEA framework, but extend it to cover AI-specific failure modes, assumptions, data dependencies, model drift, human override, and integration points. In aerospace, this usually means adding controls, evidence, monitoring, and change control around the AI component rather than replacing established safety, quality, or engineering risk methods.

Who should lead an integrated management system project?

In regulated manufacturing, an integrated management system (IMS) project should be led by a cross-functional leader with authority across quality, operations, and IT, not by a single silo. Typically this is a senior program owner (e.g., Director/VP level) with a dedicated IMS manager, clear sponsorship, and formal governance. The exact owner depends on where the main drivers sit, but they must manage tradeoffs, validation, and coexistence with legacy systems.

What is a manufacturing KPI framework and how is it different from a simple KPI list?

A manufacturing KPI framework is a structured system that links metrics to business objectives, data sources, owners, and review routines. It defines how KPIs are chosen, governed, and acted on across plants and systems. A simple KPI list is just individual metrics without this structure, alignment, or explicit accountability, and typically breaks down in complex, regulated environments.

What is meant by the process approach in ISO 9001?

In ISO 9001, the process approach means managing the organization as an interconnected system of processes, not isolated departments or procedures. Each process has inputs, activities, outputs, owners, measures, and risks. In regulated, brownfield factories, this only works if processes are clearly defined, measured, and controlled across legacy systems.
