WIP status

Digital standard work can improve operator productivity by reducing searching, rework, and ambiguity, but the impact is highly dependent on content quality, UI design, device reliability, and integration with existing MES/ERP/QMS. Poorly designed digital work instructions can slow operators, increase error risk, and add validation and change-control overhead.

Usually not an entirely new department. Aerospace manufacturers adopting AI in MES typically need a small set of clearly assigned responsibilities across manufacturing engineering, quality, OT/IT, and data governance. The exact roles depend on MES maturity, validation burden, integration quality, and whether AI is limited to advisory use or allowed to influence execution.

Program classification should affect MES deployment boundaries, data segregation, access control, validation depth, and integration scope. It should not automatically mean a separate MES for every program unless customer, export-control, cybersecurity, or qualification constraints require it.

Aerospace manufacturers should identify WIP affected by an engineering change by combining structured change control, clear effectivity rules, and traceable routing/BOM data. In brownfield plants this typically requires cross-checking PLM/ERP/MES records, lot and serial genealogy, and traveler status to avoid both missed impact and unnecessary rework.
