WIP status

WIP status is the current production state of a job, lot, serial, or unit as it moves through manufacturing.

WIP status is the current production state of work in process, such as a job, lot, batch, serial number, or unit moving through a manufacturing operation. It describes where the item is in the workflow and what condition it is in from an execution standpoint.

In manufacturing systems, WIP status is commonly used in MES, ERP, digital travelers, dispatch lists, and production dashboards. Typical statuses may indicate that work is queued, in process, waiting for inspection, on hold, completed at an operation, nonconforming, or moved to the next step. The exact status values depend on the plant’s routing model, system configuration, and operating procedures.

WIP status should not be confused with WIP inventory. WIP inventory usually refers to the quantity or value of unfinished goods. WIP status refers to the operational state of those goods and supports scheduling, traceability, exception handling, and production visibility.
